The Fashionable Slouch is Bad for Your Back!
Remember when you were in high school and your teachers were always telling you, stand up straight or don't slouch?

You probably felt like they were picking on you for no good reason. Well, there is a good reason for their concern about your posture.

You see, there's an excellent chance that you're going to experience back pain at some point in your life. You may have already.

Eighty percent of the population in the U.S. will suffer from low back pain at some point in their lives. As a matter of fact, low back pain is the leading cause of work-related disability AND the second most common reason that people go to their doctor. (Colds and flu are the most common reason.)

The fashionable slouch of movie stars such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Kirsten Dunst and Paris Hilton is simply the precursor to the onset of low back pain.

The authors of The Ergonomics Report note that the pelvic tilt of the slouching posture actually pushes the belly forward and compresses the spine. Constantly holding this posture makes the sloucher more vulnerable to musculoskeletal disorders.

Muscles adapt to a sloucher's round-shouldered posture, resulting in chest muscles that are short and tight and back muscles that are stretched and weak.

You may not realize it, but digestive problems, fatigue, and recurring headaches have been linked to poor posture!  Research shows that slouching uses five times more energy than standing up straight, causing muscle tension and cutting blood flow to the brain.

Andrew Sherman, assistant professor of rehabilitative medicine at the University of Miami's School of Medicine revealed that the price of holding their fashionable slouch is that they will almost certainly suffer from back pain and related problems later in life. And a healthy back isn’t the only benefit… good posture also makes people look five-to-ten pounds slimmer!

If it seems too difficult to think about holding your shoulders back 24 hours a day, don’t worry. If you do half an hour of exercise for your back and abs three times a week, your posture will begin to improve as your muscle tone improves. Such a large payoff for such a small investment!

While good posture may not be as bankable as the fashionable slouch, the dividends certainly are more valuable!

Which would you rather do - enjoy your golden years pain free; or suffer with the many long term musculoskeletal problems that poor posture causes? I think you know the answer!
