"People get their information from all sorts of sources," Dr. Kelly Lobb with the Texas Brain and Spine Institute said. "They're getting them from the internet, they're getting them from family and friends and a lot of time it can be misleading. So what we do is give them information that is medically proven, to make sure they don't go off on unnecessary treatments that cost a lot of money and do not do them much good." Doctors say too many MRI's and x-rays are done for simple back pain cases. While these diagnostic tools are elaborate, they provide little information for simple back pain cases. While bed rest and staying off your feet have always been the quick-fix, home-remedy solutions, Doctors now say that such advice can do more harm than good. "If they do stay in bed, we know they get weaker, it puts them at risk for falling, especially if they're older if they stay in bed their muscles get weak and it increases risk for hip fracture," Lobb said. Current wisdom among experts now urges those with back pain to stay active by exercising and stretching. Following this advice will help the back-pain-sufferer get through the pain, but it can also help prevent future injuries. "You're never to old to start exercising," Lobb said. "What we do know is no matter if you're 100 years old if you can start strength training you will gain muscle strength." Although simple back pain is rarely a cause for serious concern for most people, the elderly should be aware that back pain could be the symptom of a more serious problem. "In the elderly, back pain should be taken seriously because there are certain things like fractures that we might be worried about," Lobb said. "So they need to be evaluated soon by their family doctor and in those cases x-rays are recommended." Doctors say the most common cause for simple back pain is improper lifting, but they urge those who experience pain for more than two to three days to see their health care professional.
