Back Pain Relief - Amazing Results from an Ancient Practice
Did you know that Americans spend at least $50 billion dollars each year on low back pain relief? Low back pain is the most common cause of job-related disability and a leading contributor to missed work. Worldwide, low back pain is a common health problem. In addition, back pain is the second most common neurological ailment in the United States- second only to headache. A fortunate fact of this condition is that most occurrences of low back pain go away within a few days. However, other occurrences can take much longer to resolve or can lead to more serious conditions.

In a study published online by Beijing Medical Journal, acupressure (applying pressure with the thumbs or fingers to the same points on the body stimulated by acupuncture) seemingly is a more effective method in reducing back pain than physical therapy, the study noted.

Acupressure has been shown in previous studies to be effective in alleviating various types of pain. However, little is known about its effect on low back pain.

In a study conducted by researchers in Taiwan some 129 patients were recruited from an orthopedic clinic. All were sufferers of chronic low back pain. Each patient completed a standard disability questionnaire before being randomly sorted into two treatment groups:

   1. 64 patients received six sessions of acupressure and;

   2. 65 patients received physical therapy.

The results were analyzed both immediately after treatment and again in six months.

The study revealed that acupressure gave an 89% reduction in disability compared with physical therapy, after adjusting for pre-treatment disability. Additionally, this improvement lasted for six months.

It was also discovered that the benefit with the acupressure group included variables such as "leg pain, pain interferes with normal work," and, "days off from work or school."

According to the study, acupressure is more effective in alleviating low back pain than physical therapy in terms of pain scores, functional status, and disability, say the study authors. The effect was not only shown in the short term but in fact lasted for six months.

As a result of this fact-finding study the conclusion was drawn that these facts support previous study findings. The authors concluded that that acupressure may thus be useful for reducing pain and improving body function as well as level of disability in low back pain.

Using acupressure on joints serves to "sedate" the meridian most closely associated with the painful area. Well documented is the relation between the muscles and the meridians. The effectiveness of meridian sedation as a pain relieving technique is also a well-documented fact.
